How to Purify the Air in your home with Plants
Certain foliage plants can make a marked difference in the air quality in your home.
Benzene, Formaldehyde and Trichloroethylene (TCE) are three harmful pollutants commonly found in homes.

Spathiphyllum

Chamaedorea

Syngonium albolineatum

Traces of Benzene can be emitted from paints and varnishes,
tobacco smoke, plastics and ink. Benzene has been found to be a skin and
eye irritant.
Formaldehyde is used in the making of, and can be found in
particle board, plywood, carpet and foam insulation. It is an irritant to the
mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat.
TCE is found in dry cleaning solvents as well as many of the
same materials which emit Benzene. TCE is believed to be a cause of
liver cancer.
A study conducted by Dr. Bill Wolverton, Ph.D., of the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), found that certain
indoor plants can reduce levels of these pollutants by up to 87% in only 24 hours.

Fortunately,
some of the easiest foliage plants to grow are also the best pollution-fighters.
Following is a list of the best choices for indoor pollution control.
Aglaonema commutatum
(Chinese Evergreen)
Chamaedorea
(Bamboo Palm)
Chlorophytum commosum
(Spider Plant)
Dracaena fragrans massangeana
(Corn Plant)
Epipremnum aureus
(Pothos)
Hedera helix
(English Ivy)
Philodendron
(Philodendron)
Sansevieria trifasciata
(Mother-in-Laws tongue)
Spathiphyllum
(Peace Lily)
Syngonium albolineatum
(Arrowhead)
Recommended density is at least one six to eight inch potted plant for
every 100 square feet of floor space. To be most effective, place plants in
adequate light ( including artificial light ), and in areas where there is good
air circulation ( avoiding drafts ).
Proper maintenance will also help to maximize the pollution
control capabilities of these plants. The micro climate created by healthy plants
is the system that reduces pollutant levels.
