ORGANIC GARDENContrary to what most people think, Organic garden is not exactly a modern invention and has been around for some time to come. The ancient Romans had tinkered a bit with Organic farming and so had the Sumerians, we are just reinventing the wheel as far as Organic garden goes. The very term should give one an idea as to what this is all about, It is more or less built around the concept of ‘feeding the soil to feed the plant’. Today, we realize the value of soil nutrients, nitrogen and fertilizers and we use these in our farming methods, and call it as organic farming. Basically it is all about avoiding the usage of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and genetically modified organisms. All that one uses for Organic farming is anything and everything that is natural, like green manure, compost, biological pest control as opposed to chemical pest control and cultivation of the soil so as to maintain soil productivity as opposed to adding chemicals to the soil to do the same. This is Organic farming in a nutshell. There are at least five methods by which a person can start an Organic garden, they are the biodynamic farming, natural farming which means exactly that, French intensive method, bio intensive method thereby making full use of natural fertilizers and the nitrogen component. The last method is none other than the SPIN farming or the small plot intensive method which is one of the most popular choices when it comes to a small Organic garden. It is not all that difficult to start an Organic garden; all that one needs to have is a small plot to base this garden on and a lot of patience. The key to a good Organic garden is the soil fertility as Organic farming involves the process of the natural breakdown of organic matter. As we all know, it is the nitrogen that gets released in this process and it is this nitrogen that enriches the soil. One may have to soil one’s hand as far as Organic gardening goes and this would in all probability involve handing of rotting animal manures as well as compost. Since we cannot use chemicals in an Organic garden, the usage of manures and natural fertilizers becomes all the more important and is essential for the soil. Only a well-fertilized soil would yield a good crop and make the Organic garden a runaway success. One may wonder how it would be possible to grow a good crop with the amount of natural pests that exist today. Well, as far as Organic garden goes, it is always a good idea to allow the predatory beneficial insects to exist so that they could eat the pests. One can also be careful as far as plant selection goes and choose disease resistant varieties to plant. An Organic garden is a healthy way of growing plants and one that would benefit Mankind as a whole. |
