Arts and Science Legacy Project

What is the Butterfly Initiative?

The Butterfly Initiative is our commitment to uniting our communities in support of projects that will have a positive and lasting impact on the future of Orange County. The first of many projects is the Arts and Science Legacy Project.

What is the Arts and Science Legacy Project?

The Arts and Science Legacy Project has a goal of enhancing science and arts and serving as the impetus to start the first endowment for arts and science education in Orange County.
What are the specific project objectives?
  • Create community by engaging community members at all levels in collaborative arts and science activities.
  • Promote creativity, the heart and soul of a thriving community.
  • Raise funds for KOCE-TV's Butterfly Initiative, with 100% of the net profits for this first project going to start the first Endowment for Science and Arts Education in Orange County. With the reduction of funding for arts and science education, the endowment will provide a sustaining source of funding for important programs. It is the arts and science educational opportunities that ignite curiosity and creativity and develop retention, problem solving and critical thinking needed to fuel the innovative and entrepreneurial.
There are three primary components of the project.
  • "Do it yourself" butterfly sculptures available for purchase at Roger’s Gardens Web site. Each sculpture will be sold with corresponding information about how to decorate the sculpture for outdoor wear and butterfly gardening information with a package of seeds. Individuals, families, companies, school classes, senior centers will all be encouraged to decorate a butterfly sculpture and create a corresponding butterfly garden.
100% of the sales from every kit will be donated to KOCE.
  • One large sculpture will be purchased and created by each OC city to promote the project with a corresponding parade route designed around the different locations.
  • Butterfly sculptures will be created by celebrities and artists for auction similar to “Cows on Parade” in Chicago or “Pigs on Parade” in Portland.
The project founders are KOCE-TV, MSN, OCTA and Roger’s Gardens.
