DECK

Whether
you suspend it from a wall, a branch
on a tree, a stand or a beam on an
overhang, hanging container gardens
create a sense of beauty for any area
of your home.
One of the best things about hanging
container gardens is the opportunity
to take just about anything you have
around your house, yard or garage and
transform it into a spectacular
masterpiece that will be the envy of
anyone who will see it. Something as
simple as a freestanding wire basket
can easily be converted into a unique
hanging basket by adding chain, evenly
space around the rim. Filling the
bottom half way up the sides with
presoaked sphagnum moss is the perfect
backdrop to showcase a terra cotta pot
filled with a showy Juncus grass, your
favorite hardy succulents and
dripping with fishhooks cascading down
the sides. An arrangement such as
this can last for many seasons or can
easily be changed out to compliment
the décor of any party.
To build a romantic hanging garden
that will create the perfect mood for
a special evening, you can start with
a metal chandelier that you fill with
a thick layer of moss and then line
with florist foil to keep the soil in
place. Next select plants that will
assimilate well in the area it is to
be hung. If you are hanging the
chandelier from a large tree branch
that is mostly shade, using shade
loving plants is the way to go.
Combining ferns, such a Mother Fern,
for its light and airy feel, as well
as the wonderful limey-green of the
foliage with the long-lasting,
tropical bromeliad, in vibrant shades
of yellow is a wonderful and inspiring
combination that will add charm to any
space. Complete the look with candles
and you have created a one-of-a-kind
chandelier.
Everyone loves homegrown lettuce and
fresh herbs. Creating a wall basket,
positioned by a kitchen window, gives
you not only the convenience of having
them right at your fingertips, but you
will love the aromas the herbs send
throughout the kitchen. A moss
rectangular window box is the perfect
planter for this project. The hardest
part will be deciding what herbs and
lettuce to grow, you should choose
them based on the season and what you
enjoy cooking with. What’s nice about
using a moss planter for this project,
is you can also side plant the basket
w/edible flowers, such as violas, that
not only add beauty to the planter,
but would make a perfect garnish of
your salad plate.
Dressing up a bare wall is easy and
will add interest to any courtyard or
front entry. There are no rules
when it comes to planting in
containers, pick what you love and
give it a try. The first step is
finding a wall basket that you like
and fits the look of the area. Next,
select a tall plant, such as a grass
or a flax, to use in the back of the
planting to fill in the negative space
of the wall. Once that has been
planted, fill in with a medium height
plant, possibly a flowering plant in a
color to compliment the surrounding
area. Finish off the arrangement with
a low growing plant with decorative
foliage to add interest. Once
complete, water thoroughly and let
drain before hanging on the wall.
You’ll be surprised how easy it is to
create a unique hanging basket that
can only be found at your home.
There is no limit to what you can use
to plant in, and if it can be planted
in, there is a way to add more
interest by also hanging it and
utilizing all of that empty space
overhead. Hanging basket gardens are
perfect for a tree branch, porch,
patio or deck. Experiment and use
your imagination, show your
personality, but most of all have
fun!! Each season brings a whole new
color palette of flowers and plants to
enhance your hanging baskets.
