Hanging Baskets @ Roger's Gardens
Instant Outdoor Color!
We all love color in our gardens. At Roger's, we like to think of
ourselves as pioneers in the creation of hand-planted baskets of
colorful flowers. Our
English Basket Gardens -
designed for indoor use - have become wildly popular as gift ideas
and as living, vibrant alternatives to cut flowers. For outdoors,
our hanging baskets, whether mounted to a wall or suspended
'floating' in space, have been associated with Roger's since 1970
and have been our 'signature' for 3 decades.
Hanging basket gardens are practical, pretty, and make use of space
that is otherwise empty. With few exceptions today, our garden spaces
have shrunk and been surrounded by more and more walls. Artful use of
this wall-space and available air-space can create the 'illusion' of
lushness and scale which escapes so many modern gardens. Hand-planted
Sweet Alyssum, Lobelia, Fibrous Begonia, Marigolds, and Ivy in hanging
baskets provide irresistible instant outdoor color.
Here are some advantages to the use of hanging baskets in your garden:
- Instant Color: when most flowering plants are past their prime,
hanging baskets can extend summer color into fall.
- Create Visual Interest: focus the eye on unusual spots in
limited spaces.
- Great Hobby Activity: experiment with plantings in a controlled
environment; let your imagination run wild!
- We have prepared this web presentation to illustrate both the
history of hanging baskets at Roger's Gardens, and to show you
how to create your own hand-planted masterworks. At the end of
the show, we'll direct you to an exclusive online store of
baskets, moss, and other accessories so that you can get
started right away!
And, now, on to
A Brief History of Hanging Baskets at Roger's.

Rogers
Garden's English Basket Gardens
By Chris Nichols
If you have been
to Roger's Gardens, then you have seen our English Basket Gardens (EBG)
that our talented floral design team create daily for your enjoyment.
These signature living floral arrangements are a long lasting alternative
to fresh cut flowers. They make terrific gifts for any occasion and are
available year round. Our EBG's can last for weeks or even months with
a little maintenance and loving care.
Some of our English Basket Gardens include Azaleas, Hydrangeas, Cyclamen,
Ivy, Palms, and Ferns. Rogers also carries an extensive line of Orchid
EBG's, some in house varieties include Phaelenopsis, Oncidium, Ondontglossom,
Colmanara, Brassia, and others. Our designs change seasonally with different
varieties of blooming and green plants, all artfully arranged with maximum
splashes of color and fragrance.
We often use earthy terra cotta pots, woodland baskets, or rusty urns for
our designs. We accent them with opulent ribbon and tree branches, like
birch or willow; all made fresh and ready for delivery or pick-up daily.
Our design staff takes careful steps to insure every EBG will live

and flourish for a period of weeks. Here are some tips to stretch the longevity
of an English Basket Garden even longer:
- Watering is the most important and often misunderstood task in caring
for indoor planters. When we design an EBG, we line the container with
a heavy plastic coated foil. This foil helps keep water in the container,
not on your table.
It allows for maximum space for soil and plants.
However, there is no drainage for the plants in the basket and this
can lead to over-watering. To help with this issue we sometimes put
a layer of pea gravel in the bottom of the
basket. Remember, live plants will wilt from standing in too much water
just as easily as from having little or no water. A happy balance can
be reached quickly once you get to know the best growing conditions
in your own house. Also, when an EBG is planted with blooming plants,
they are meant to last for a few weeks only indoors, so they may need
to be replaced seasonally. Transplant your older blooming plants to
outdoor climates and watch them bloom again with proper sunlight and
growing conditions.
- Indoor climates can lead to drying of the topsoil
in a planted basket. Our design solution is to
use a very thick, green layer of moss, called Mood
Moss. Another variety is Sphagnum Moss. They help
retain moisture to the topsoil and are very decorative
for our purposes. They should be removed when watering
an EBG, because they react like a sponge, soaking
up moisture and water from the topsoil. Mosses
are living organisms, so we recommend soaking or
misting it away from the EBG at least once a week
to maintain the rich green color.
EBG's are meant to be watered anywhere from once a week, to every 2 days,
depending on the variety of plants used. Be sure to request written care
instructions for a particular type of blooming or green plant. Our English
Basket Garden Collection has several different styles available at rogersgardens.com.
