Front Porch Fall Inspiration

One of the most fun and exciting parts of being a gardener is getting creative with your yard, garden, and surrounding hardscapes. But, the fun doesn’t have to stop just because summer is winding down! We’ve tracked down some fall decorating ideas that will, without a doubt, spruce up your front porch in the best way possible from now until Halloween.

There are a lot of different fall decor ideas out there, but these 5 ideas make the most of the late-season blooms we get from perennials like sunflowers, mums (of course), and even salvia. All of them are fun, do-it-yourself fall porch decorating ideas that you can totally handle and which you can personalize as much or as little as you want.

A Wreath for You & the Birds

Channel the rustic, boho fall vibes with a simple grapevine wreath. With a little bit of glue, and some beautiful flowers and seed heads. Sunflowers, coneflowers and mums will continue blooming well into early fall, so why not take advantage by creating this easy DIY project.

Simply snip off some coneflower and sunflowers at the base of the flower. It’s best to allow the flower heads to dry for a few days, and then hot glue them to the grapevine wreath in an alternating pattern. They will look gorgeous, and the birds will love you for this fall porch decorating idea until Halloween.

Fall Porch Decor With Mums

Mums are one of the most classic flowers for fall decorating! From hanging planters to window boxes, there are so many ways that you can get creative with mums this fall. You can set an autumnal tone by sticking with the classic yellows, oranges, and deep reds. Or, you can add a surprising splash of color with magenta or purple mums, while mixing in more jewel tones into your porch decor with cushions or a chic new welcome mat.

Pair your mums with rustic metal planters to carry the fall theme right through to your pots, and add visual interest by placing your fall mums at varying heights on overturned containers, garden pots and plant stands. For another fall-inspired, simple porch decor idea, dress-up potted mums purchased from the garden center by wrapping the pot in burlap and securing it with a length of fall-themed ribbon, then adorn the rest of your front porch with pumpkins, gourds and a fall-inspired wreath—and then you’ll be set for ‘everything pumpkin spice season’!

Use Pumpkins or Gourds as Planters

Pumpkins and gourds are classic fall porch decor, and lucky for us fall-obsessed gardeners—they also make for lovely natural flower pots! Complement a big, bright orange pumpkin by planting it with some deep purple salvia and cheery yellow black-eyed Susan’s, or stick with the classic fall-themed mums mentioned above. Be sure to select a pumpkin that is approximately the same height as the pot you intend to use. Just like with pumpkin carving, take a serrated knife to cut a hole slightly larger than the diameter of the pot, and then scoop out all of the pumpkin seeds and flesh. Drill a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin to ensure your potted plants have proper drainage, and voila, you have a perfect little fall-themed planter for your porch! It’s a great activity to do with the kids!
