How to Make Homemade Fairy Gardens

Miniature gardens have been trending lately, and what better time to try it out than over the holidays?

This is a fantastic project for adults and children alike and is sure to bring fun and tranquility to your space all year round. We’ll walk you through the options, the supplies list, and the care process so that you can enjoy a successful garden that is sure to appease the fairies!

Your Fairy Garden Design

The first thing to decide is whether you want to build an open or closed garden:

An open garden is simply a normal pot filled with plants and rocks or a miniature scene complete with a mushroom house and figurines.
A closed garden is a sealed jar that creates its own ecosystem with the addition of a little water to start (the plant recycles through absorption and transpiration.)

An open version is probably the best choice for kids, where they can play in the little landscape they created. If you’re looking for greenery with longevity, try designing a closed garden that is self-sustaining.

Homemade Fairy Garden Shopping List

Here are the things that you’ll need to get started:

A container of choice! Wide mouth mason jars, broken pottery repurposed, a big decorative bowl—fairies can make a home out of anything, so get creative!
Small rocks to layer below the soil.
Potting soil.
Craft supplies, including figurines, painted rocks, crystals, little lights, and whatever else brings you joy.

For closed fairy gardens:

Tropical plants or plants that will do well in high humidity, such as ferns or moss.
A lid or covering to seal the jar.
Charcoal to purify the water.

Taking Care of Your Garden

If you have an open garden, don’t forget to water!

With a closed garden, simply add a couple of tablespoons of water to the jar before sealing it tight and leaving it in some sunlight to grow. If you notice that the environment is too dry after some time, you can add more water.
