The Moro Blood Orange is the most popular red-fleshed orange, known for its intense, deep red to maroon interior, which is due to anthocyanin pigments that develop best in warm inland valleys with cool nights. The tree is an attractive evergreen citrus variety with a moderate growth rate and a round, somewhat spreading habit, reaching 8-12 feet tall and wide (semi-dwarfs about 1/2 to 2/3 that size). The fruit is round, medium-sized with a red-tinged skin and a juicy, sweet, delicious berry flavor. It's nearly seedless and self-pollinating, producing fruit from November to May in California, although color and flavor are best in the warm inland valleys. The Moro is moderately cold-tolerant, able to withstand temperatures down to about 27¡F, but needs protection in colder zones. The distinct maroon color makes it ideal for culinary uses, adding vibrant color and unique flavor to various dishes.
