The Midnight Valencia Orange is a premium sweet orange variety, originating as a mutation of the standard Valencia orange in South Africa. It's a vigorous, evergreen tree with a shrubby habit, reaching about 8-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide (semi-dwarfs about 1/2 to 2/3 that size), with fragrant white blossoms. Unlike traditional Valencias, it ripens slightly earlier, typically from late spring to early summer, although the harvest can extend into the fall. The fruit is large, virtually seedless (classified as having three or fewer seeds), juicy, sweet-tart, and low in acid. Midnight Valencias are self-pollinating, though cross-pollination can increase yields. It requires full sun to partial sun and thrives in warm, sunny climates like Southern California, suitable for zones 8-11. It needs protection below 28¡F and is somewhat more susceptible to frost and copper deficiency than standard Valencias. This variety is ideal for fresh eating, juicing, and extending the citrus season.
