Gopher Purge, also known as Gopher Spurge or Mole Plant, is a distinctive herbaceous plant belonging to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). Its scientific name is Euphorbia lathyris. This erect, upright-growing species features narrow, gray-green leaves arranged in opposite pairs along stiff stems, often reaching heights of 2 to 4 feet (occasionally up to 4 feet), though smaller specimens may be as short as 5 inches. It behaves as an annual or biennial, producing insignificant yellowish flowers and a milky, irritating sap throughout its parts.
Gopher Purge thrives in USDA hardiness zones roughly 5 to 10, preferring full sun and well-drained soils, including poor, sandy, or rocky conditions, making it drought-tolerant once established. Traditionally planted in gardens as a natural repellent for gophers and moles due to its toxic sap and strong odor in the roots—though this effect is largely considered folklore—it has also seen historical medicinal uses as a purgative or folk remedy for skin issues like warts. Caution is advised, as the plant is poisonous and its sap can cause skin irritation.
