Product Details

Mint 'Fish' (Houttuynia cordata), commonly known as fish mint, fish leaf, or chameleon plant, is a distinctive herbaceous perennial prized for its heart-shaped leaves and unique fishy aroma and flavor from volatile oils. Not a true mint (despite the name), it forms a low-growing, spreading groundcover with dull green (or variegated in some cultivars) foliage and small white flower spikes in spring or summer. The plant typically reaches 6–15 inches (15–38 cm) in height but spreads vigorously via rhizomes, often forming dense mats.

Fish mint thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5–11, preferring moist, shady to partially sunny conditions and tolerating wet soils, even as a marginal aquatic plant. It is native to Asia and can become invasive in ideal conditions. Culinary uses include fresh leaves as a garnish in salads, soups, stir-fries, and Vietnamese or Southeast Asian dishes; it enhances fish, meats, chutneys, fritters, and pickles with its bold, citrusy-fishy notes, though the taste is acquired and best used sparingly.
