Product Details

Chives 'Onion' (Allium schoenoprasum var. schoenoprasum), commonly known as common chives or onion chives, is a hardy perennial herb in the Allium family. Growing 12–18 inches tall, it forms dense clumps of slender, hollow, grass-like green leaves with a mild onion flavor. In late spring to early summer, it produces attractive spherical clusters of lavender-pink flowers that attract pollinators. Easy to grow in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, it thrives in gardens, containers, or as an edging plant and is cold-hardy in USDA zones 3–9.

The leaves and flowers of onion chives are widely used in cooking for their delicate onion taste without the pungency of onions or garlic. Freshly snipped leaves add flavor to salads, soups, omelets, potatoes, dips, and cream cheese spreads. The edible flowers make beautiful garnishes for dishes or infused vinegars. Chives also offer mild medicinal benefits, supporting digestion and providing antioxidants. Regular harvesting encourages new growth, making this versatile herb a staple in home kitchens and herb gardens.
