Lavender 'Dutch Provence' (Lavandula x intermedia 'Dutch Provence', often associated with or similar to 'Provence' lavandin) is a vigorous hybrid lavandin cultivar, blending English and Portuguese lavender traits for robust growth and high essential oil yield. This evergreen perennial forms tall, mounding bushes 24–36 inches high and wide, with silvery-gray, aromatic foliage and long, upright stems bearing dense spikes of light to pale lavender-purple flowers in mid-to-late summer. Known for its exceptionally strong, classic lavender fragrance—sweet, herbaceous, and camphorous—it's heat- and drought-tolerant, thriving in full sun, well-drained soil, and suitable for USDA zones 5–9. It's prized for commercial and garden use due to its productivity and longevity.
This fragrant variety excels in culinary, aromatic, and decorative applications, particularly in Provençal-inspired dishes as part of herbes de Provence blends for roasted meats (like lamb or chicken), vegetables, marinades, and sauces. Use sparingly fresh or dried buds to flavor honey, teas, cookies, ice cream, jellies, or vinegars for subtle floral notes. It's ideal for sachets, potpourri, essential oil extraction, perfumes, soaps, and dried bouquets or wands. Attracts pollinators in gardens; its strong scent soothes in aromatherapy.
