Product Details

Lovage (Levisticum officinale), also known as garden lovage or Maggi herb, is a hardy perennial herb in the Apiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean and western Asia. This tall, robust plant reaches 4–6 feet in height with thick, hollow stems and large, glossy, dark-green, deeply divided leaves resembling celery or flat-leaf parsley. It produces umbels of tiny yellow flowers in summer, attracting pollinators. The entire plant is aromatic, boasting an intense celery-like flavor with hints of parsley, anise, and mild citrus—stronger and more complex than true celery. Easy to grow in full sun to partial shade with moist, rich soil, it's perennial in zones 3–9 and low-maintenance once established.

Primarily a culinary powerhouse, lovage's leaves and stems add bold depth to soups, stews, broths, sauces, salads, potato dishes, eggs, poultry, pork, fish, and stuffing. Use sparingly fresh (a few leaves flavor an entire pot) or dried for year-round seasoning; young stems can be eaten like celery raw or cooked. Seeds resemble fennel or celery seeds for baking or sprinkling. Traditionally medicinal as a diuretic, digestive aid, and carminative for indigestion, flatulence, or urinary support, though consult professionals for therapeutic use. Fresh maximizes its vibrant, savory punch.
