Product Details

Mint 'Basil' (Mentha × piperita f. citrata 'Basil'), also called Basil Mint, is a hardy perennial hybrid in the mint family, not a true basil (Ocimum). This vigorous, upright grower reaches 18–24 inches tall with bushy, spreading habit and rounded to narrow, dark green leaves often tinged reddish-purple underneath. It features a distinctive aroma and flavor blending sweet basil notes with subtle minty freshness and occasional citrus undertones—milder in menthol than standard peppermint. Thriving in moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, it's productive, cold-hardy (zones 4+), and spreads readily like other mints, so container growing is recommended to control invasiveness.

This versatile herb substitutes for sweet basil in many dishes, especially when basil is unavailable or out of season. Use fresh leaves raw in salads, pestos, tomato-based recipes, fruit salads, melon, soups, fish, vegetables, or garnishes for a bright, basil-like punch. Add late to cooked dishes (pasta, sauces, stir-fries) as heat reduces mint dominance, leaving basil essence. Infuse teas, cocktails, dressings, or syrups for refreshing drinks; pair with tomatoes, fruits, or cheeses. Fresh maximizes flavor, though it dries or freezes well.
