Mint 'Mojito' (Mentha × villosa 'Mojito'), also known as Cuban Mint or hairy mint, is a vigorous, spreading perennial herb and a hybrid between spearmint and apple mint. This fast-growing plant reaches 12–36 inches tall with an upright, rhizomatous habit, featuring bright green, oval to lance-shaped, slightly fuzzy or hairy leaves that are larger and more robust than many mints. It produces spikes of tiny pale pink flowers in summer and exudes a refreshing, aromatic fragrance with a milder, sweeter profile than standard spearmint—offering subtle citrus hints, less pungency, and a balanced minty sweetness ideal for muddling. Hardy in zones 4–9, it thrives in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil but spreads aggressively, so container growing is recommended.
This authentic Cuban variety stars in the classic mojito cocktail, where its tender leaves are muddled with lime, sugar, and rum for the perfect refreshing flavor. Use fresh in beverages like teas, lemonades, infused water, or herbal infusions; enhance salads, fruit dishes, garnishes, sauces, marinades, lamb recipes, or desserts. Its mild citrus-mint essence adds bright notes to summer drinks and light cuisine without overpowering. Harvest frequently; fresh maximizes vibrancy, though leaves freeze well in ice cubes or dry for year-round use.
