Product Details

Sage 'Berggarten' (Salvia officinalis 'Berggarten') is a compact, woody perennial herb prized for its large, broad, silvery-gray to gray-green leaves that are strongly aromatic and slightly fuzzy. This cultivar, originating from Germany, forms a neat, bushy mound 1–2 feet tall and wide, with wider foliage than standard common sage. It produces short spikes of pale violet-blue, two-lipped flowers in summer, though it blooms less prolifically than other varieties. Hardy in USDA zones 5–10, it thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for herb gardens, borders, or containers.

Primarily valued for culinary uses, its savory, peppery leaves enhance dishes like stuffings, meats, sauces, and poultry, either fresh or dried. The flavor is robust and often considered superior for cooking. Traditionally, sage also offers medicinal benefits, including aiding digestion, reducing inflammation, and supporting oral health through teas or infusions. Its fragrant foliage attracts pollinators while adding ornamental appeal to gardens.
