Product Details

Santolina 'Grey', commonly known as gray santolina or lavender cotton (*Santolina chamaecyparissus*), is a compact, evergreen sub-shrub prized for its aromatic, finely divided silver-gray foliage. This Mediterranean native forms dense, mounding clumps about 1–2 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide, with a woolly texture that gives it a soft, cotton-like appearance from afar. In summer, it produces cheerful, button-like bright yellow flowers on slender stalks rising above the foliage, adding vibrant contrast to its silvery leaves. Extremely drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, it thrives in full sun and well-drained, poor or sandy soils.

Beyond its ornamental value, Santolina 'Grey' serves many practical uses in gardens and homes. It excels as a low hedge, edging plant, groundcover, or accent in rock gardens, xeriscapes, and knot gardens, providing year-round structure and fragrance. The aromatic leaves repel insects like moths when dried and placed in sachets or potpourri, and the flowers can be dried for arrangements or wreaths. Traditionally, it has been used in folk medicine for digestive issues or as an antiseptic, though it's primarily valued today for its low-maintenance beauty in dry landscapes.
