Product Details

Thyme 'English' (Thymus vulgaris), also known as common thyme or garden thyme, is a hardy, aromatic evergreen perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Native to the Mediterranean region, it forms a compact, woody-based mound with tiny, gray-green leaves that are linear to elliptic and slightly fuzzy. In late spring to summer, it produces small clusters of pale purple or pink flowers that attract bees and butterflies. This variety is prized for its strong, earthy, slightly peppery flavor and fragrance.

English thyme typically grows 6–12 inches tall and spreads 12–18 inches wide, creating a low, bushy habit ideal for edging or ground cover. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5–9 (sometimes to zone 4 with protection), preferring full sun, well-drained sandy or loamy soil, and tolerating drought and poor fertility once established. Primarily used as a culinary herb, English thyme enhances soups, stews, roasted meats, poultry, sauces, and stuffings, often as a key component in herbes de Provence or bouquet garni. Medicinally, it has traditional antiseptic, antioxidant, and respiratory benefits thanks to thymol in its essential oil, while its evergreen foliage adds ornamental value in herb gardens or rockeries.
