Cilantro 'Vietnamese', also known as Vietnamese coriander, rau răm, or Persicaria odorata, is a perennial herb native to Southeast Asia. Unlike true cilantro (Coriandrum sativum), it belongs to the knotweed family and thrives in warm, humid conditions, making it an excellent heat-tolerant alternative in zones 9–11. The plant features elongated, lance-shaped dark green leaves often marked with a distinctive burgundy or chestnut crescent at the base, growing on reddish-tinged stems to form a low-spreading mound up to 1–2 feet tall.
Its leaves deliver a bold, zesty flavor blending cilantro's citrusy notes with minty freshness and a peppery, slightly spicy kick—stronger than regular cilantro, so use sparingly. In Vietnamese and Southeast Asian cuisine, young leaves garnish pho, spring rolls (gỏi cuốn), soups like canh chua, noodle dishes, salads, and stews, adding vibrant aroma and neutralizing strong odors in fish or meat preparations. It also flavors Malaysian laksa and other regional specialties.
